IWM Duxford is an inspirational place and lends itself to a wide range of study. The Department for Learning is keen to help students with gifts or talents in the areas of science, technology and history, in particular, to use the site in stimulating and challenging ways.
Primary
We are happy to discuss a tailor-made programme for school groups. Please call 01223 499341 to arrange details.
Secondary
There are numerous possibilities, examples of which include science/control technology and history/resistant materials combinations.
Control technology: a day based around the scenario of converting this daylight only airfield into 24-hour operation. Students will visit the Control Tower to view current procedures and then go to the Education Workshop to use Flowol control software to programme runway approach light systems according to CAA guidelines. The finished programs will be downloaded to PICs to drive a scale model runway.
Resistant Materials: (Science and Technology Challenge - KS3) a day starting with a visit to the Land Warfare Hall for presentation about the special vehicles (funnies) used during the D-day Landings plus a visit inside a WWII tank followed by a workshop session. The students use Kre8, a very versatile construction system, to make their own versions of the ‘funnies’.
