Warship Conservation Volunteers at work on HMS Belfast
Warship Conservation Volunteers at work on HMS Belfast
The museum group's five branches are presently supported by more than 900 active volunteers with fieldwork, conservation, and interpretation being amongst the many roles now undertaken by IWM volunteers across the UK.

Voluntary role openings at the five branches of the Imperial War Museum:

Volunteering with the Museum's London Branches

The IWM currently involves volunteers at its three London Branches.  These are HMS Belfast, the Churchill Museum & Cabinet War Rooms and IWM London itself.  Our openings vary as projects within the branches start and finish.   At the current time, following both developments within the organisation and recent recruitment drives, there are only a limited number of openings available for either long term volunteers or short term student placements at the Churchill Museum & Cabinet War Rooms and IWM London.  On HMS Belfast there are still openings for long term volunteers prepared to get involved with hands on conservation roles and a smaller number of longer term volunteer spaces within our Learning Support Volunteer Team.

HMS Belfast

To support the conservation and operation of this unique vessel the museum is continuing to build up its thriving volunteer programme. As an HMS Belfast Volunteer you will become part of the ship’s company.  You will help us keep the ship afloat and educate the visitors of today’s’ and future generations.  In return we will offer access and retail benefits and training in your new voluntary role.

Volunteer openings currently exist for:

Recruitment News (London Branches)

As our last Volunteer Welcome Day events in June attracted some 20 prospective volunteers many of our volunteer teams across the London Branches are now full, and we are currently working to involve these potential new recruits within the operational teams when spaces become available.

As our capacity for additional volunteers, other than Warship Conservation Volunteers on HMS Belfast, is now extremely limited our next ‘Volunteer Welcome Day’ recruitment events to screen potential volunteers for future service are unlikely to be held any earlier than November or December of this year.

For more information on our volunteer programme and an application form, please contact the Volunteer Co-ordinator, Jim Hutchinson on 020 7940 6345 or, by  email at: jhutchinson@iwm.org.uk
