War Game Days are based around the ‘crisis game’ format. Looking at the ‘what if’ of history, this war game day recreates the strategic position of Operation Herkules and looks at the alternative outcomes of the operation. 

Completely interactive, the day is designed to enable participants to step into the shoes of a historical military commander. It also gives participants the opportunity to take part in history and enact the role of a historical figure.  Operation Herkules will be run by Mr Tim Gow who is a military historian and war games expert.

Prior to the day, participants will receive a pre-game brief detailing the history of the operation, together with a personal brief outlining their particular role on the day.

The day will commence with a short lecture on the history of the operation.  Participants will then be split into two teams, representing the historical opponents.  A further team brief will be given and then the game begins.

Progress reports are fed to each team, which trigger a lively discussion regarding potential outcomes and lead to the next strategic manoeuvre.  Each decisive action is recorded on a central map and relayed to the opposing team.  At the end of the day’s play, a final debrief is held and the potential outcomes of the operation are explored.

After your booking it is imperative that you email tim.gow@btconnect.com to confirm your attendance and to receive your pre-game brief.  You can also select which team you wish to play on and you can even select a historical commander (operated on a first-come, first-served basis).

Please do not enter the Museum through the Visitor Centre, instead follow the road around behind AirSpace and look for the signs for Corporate Parking.  There will be signs at the rear entrance of AirSpace to direct you into the building.  Please have your ticket ready to show to admissions staff as a proof of purchase. 

Please note that the ticket price does not include refreshments or lunch.  The Mess Restaurant and cafés serve a variety of food and drinks for you to enjoy.  Alternatively, visitors are welcome to bring a packed lunch and to make use of our picnic room and many picnic tables outside.
