Duxford's New Bonus Days

Imperial War Museum, Duxford is an outstanding destination for GA aircraft. There is more to interest and excite pilots and aviation enthusiasts than at almost any other airfield in the world.

Visitors are welcome at all times when the museum is open, but the airfield has introduced some special fly-in benefits: "Duxford Bonus Days."

Arrive in a qualifying aircraft on a Bonus Day and benefit from a special landing fee of £7 and discounted admission to the museum facilities (£7). And children are free.

And on Bonus days only, the Briefing Room and balcony on the first floor of the historic Control Tower is freely available for Bonus pilots and their passengers – for the best view of the airfield. The £25 million ‘AirSpace’ project is now fully open and really is a ‘must-see.’

Bonus Days planned for 2008 are:

April 12 Safety Bonus Day – arrive in any light aircraft, see below
May 3 'Pilot Magazine' Bonus Day – meet the folk from ‘Pilot’ – (any aircraft)
May 31 Cessna Bonus Day – arrive in any Cessna
June 14 Flight Training Organisation Bonus Day – any aircraft from the FTOs
July 26 Piper Bonus Day – any Piper
August 9       Taildraggers and any Jodel/Robin Bonus Day – arrive in any of these
Dec 13 Christmas Dinner Bonus Day

On 12 April, to kick-off the flying season, we will have an informal Safety  Bonus Day:

  • Steve McKie of NATS “Airspace Infringements” He will show some of the thought-provoking radar replays of controlled airspace infringements.
  • Farnborough ATC will explain how the London LARS works, timed to coincide with the extension to the north – just for once you can talk to a controller face to face.
  • Irv Lee, who runs the ‘Fly on Track’ website, will be giving some of his popular and easy-to-understand weather tips.
  • David Cockburn of CAA will explain their friendly policy towards use of GPS – safely.
  • AOPA will introduce their Wings Award scheme for developing PPLs/NPPLs

The day won’t be the usual format of hours of formal presentations. Instead, arrive and leave when you like and while you’re here chat in small groups to the professionals mentioned above. David Cockburn will give his presentation at 12.00 and 14.30, and will be informally available throughout the day. There’s no special charge, just the normal Bonus Day discounted landing and discounted museum admission. On this day only, if the weather is poor, or if you can’t fly in, you can come in by car – but you must pre-book.

The airfield team look forward to hearing from you (call for PPR and briefing 01223 833376) and seeing you on the day.
