Keep the Home Fires Burning with Edie Biggs

A role-play activity for primary children

Edie Biggs
It is 1940.  Edie is a housewife from London’s East End.  She’s come to Duxford to stay with her cousin Ethel, to get away from the nightly bombing raids during the Blitz.  With her she’s brought her daughter Glad, 12, and her son Ronnie who’s 5.  Edie likes to “do her bit” for the war effort by raising money for the Spitfire Fund.  She also keeps the family fed, and looks after things at home.  She will talk to the children about rationing, cooking, keeping the house and the family clean and tidy, Digging for Victory, evacuation, gas masks and other issues concerned with Keeping the Home Fires Burning during this difficult time.

The event is designed specifically for Key Stage 2 pupils, with Years 4, 5 and 6 benefiting the most.  Activities can be adapted as necessary for Key Stage 1 and Year 3.

Cost:

£2.00 per child for this event, payable on the day at the Admissions Desk, by cheque (payee 'Imperial War Museum'), cash or VISA.
