| Montgomery studying a field map |
Bernard Law Montgomery, probably the most celebrated British military commander of the twentieth century, was in charge of all Allied ground forces on D-Day. He led the Allies, controversially, but ultimately successfully, through the Battle for Normandy and later, as commander of 21st Army Group, to the end of the war in Germany.
